A Creative Solution

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted schools in many ways. When one local school had to cancel its science fair, WWU students stepped in with a creative solution-- hosting a science fair online!

How it Happened

As part of their SCED coursework and practicum, Western preservice teachers took on the task of developing a virtual science fair program. Breaking into committees, the students designed the website, created parent newsletters and guides, provided help sessions, and developed a recognition program. Over 100 students signed up-- with 96 of those opting to attend weekly Zoom sessions with WWU students as their science fair mentors!

Disseminating the Product

The virtual fair was held using FlipGrid, enabling students and their families near and far to view their projects. WWU students have shared their experiences and expertise with other educators by presenting at the NSTA Engage: Spring 2021 virtual conference, and serving as guest speakers to other practicum students who will be taking over the implementation of the virtual science fair.
