Support the SMATE Program

Science Education that Matters

At the SMATE (Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education) program at Western Washington University, our work is centered on preparing pre-service teachers to enter the classroom ready to engage, inspire, and support all learners.

Our students don’t just study science, they learn how to teach it. Through hands-on, three-dimensional coursework and early field experiences, they develop the skills to address student misconceptions, build inclusive classrooms, and connect learning to real-world contexts.

Partnerships that Strengthen Learning

A defining strength of our program is our partnership with local schools and community organizations. Our students work directly with K–12 learners through practicum placements and outreach programs. Whether they are supporting classroom instruction, leading STEM activities, or engaging with place-based learning connected to our region, these experiences are essential to their development as educators and meaningful for the students and communities they serve.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

Gifts to SMATE directly support this important work. Contributions help us:

  • Provide high-quality scholarship and research experiences for our students
  • Support innovative, hands-on teaching and learning opportunities
  • Host events that connect university students to the K-12 community

The impact of your support extends far beyond our program. Each SMATE graduate goes on to teach and influence hundreds of students over the course of their career, creating a lasting and meaningful ripple effect in classrooms across our region and beyond.

Invest in the Next Generation of Science Educators

We invite you to support SMATE and invest in the next generation of science and mathematics educators. Your support helps ensure that future teachers enter classrooms prepared to make a difference from day one.
